Coles: common questions about working there
Hiring process, interview format, pay bands, benefits — sourced from Coles's own materials and our editorial review.
- What to Expect from a Coles Interview
For frontline team member roles, Coles interviews are typically a one-on-one conversation with the Store Manager or a Department Manager. The format is competency-based, meaning you will be asked to give specific examples from your past experience rather than hypothetical answers. Interviews are generally warm and conversational, but you should still prepare specific examples in advance and be ready to answer questions clearly and directly.
- Why do you want to work at Coles?
Show that you have thought about this beyond just needing a job. Mention Coles' reputation as a community-focused employer, its commitment to sustainability, or the career development opportunities available. If you are a regular Coles customer and genuinely appreciate the brand, mention this. Specific and genuine answers are far more compelling than generic ones.
- Can you give me an example of a time you provided excellent customer service?
Use the STAR method: describe the Situation, the Task, the Actions you took, and the Result. Make your example specific and focused on the positive impact your actions had on the customer. Customer service is central to Coles' brand promise, so this question is one of the most important you will face. If you have no formal work experience, draw on any context where you helped someone navigate a problem or ensured they had a positive experience.
- How do you handle a challenging or upset customer?
Demonstrate empathy, active listening, and a solutions-focused approach. Describe a specific scenario, explain how you acknowledged the customer's concern without becoming defensive, and describe the steps you took to resolve the issue. A strong answer shows that you can de-escalate tension calmly and professionally while keeping the customer's needs at the centre of the interaction.
- What is your availability?
Be honest and specific. Coles stores operate seven days a week, including early mornings for bakery and deli operations and late evenings for night fill. The more flexible your availability, the more attractive your application will be. If you have genuine limitations, state them clearly. Overpromising and then struggling to meet your roster commitments is one of the most common issues new team members face.
- Is the Coles interview hard?
For entry-level team member roles, the Coles interview is not particularly difficult. The main things you need to demonstrate are customer service orientation, reliability, and genuine enthusiasm for the role. Coming prepared with specific examples will make the interview feel much more comfortable and give you a clear advantage over underprepared candidates.
- Does Coles do group interviews?
Group interviews at Coles are sometimes used during large-scale hiring events, such as when a new store is opening or during major seasonal hiring periods. For regular individual vacancies, a one-on-one interview with the Store Manager or a Department Manager is the standard format.
- How soon after a Coles interview will I hear back?
For frontline team member roles, most applicants hear back within one to two weeks of their interview. During high-volume hiring periods, the timeline can be shorter. If you have not heard back within two weeks, following up politely with the Store Manager is a reasonable approach.
