Principal Software Engineer – CommBank Health

Do work that matters

At CommBank, we’re building the future of payments and digital experiences for critical industries across Australia.

Within our Payments & Acceptance domain, CommBank Health plays a unique role at the intersection of payments and healthcare — enabling seamless claiming and payment experiences between healthcare providers, insurers, and government services.

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will lead the technical direction of this platform while remaining hands-on in its evolution. You’ll shape how we modernise our engineering environment, uplift capability, and bring strategic platforms in-house.

This is your opportunity to define strategy and execute it in a high-impact domain that directly supports real-world healthcare transactions.

See yourself in our team

You’ll join CommBank Health, a specialised engineering team sitting within the broader Payments & Customer Present ecosystem.

Our platform supports critical healthcare payment and claiming journeys across Australia, including:

  • In-terminal healthcare claiming and payments

  • Integration with Medicare, private health funds and government services

  • eCommerce-based healthcare transactions

  • Payment terminals and customer-present experiences

With multiple squads across platform and application engineering, the team is on a journey to uplift engineering maturity and modernise its core platforms.

You’ll work closely with Engineering Managers, Chapter Leads, Architects and senior engineers to drive technical alignment across the domain.

What you’ll do

Technical Strategy & Platform Evolution

  • Define and execute the technical vision for CommBank Health platforms

  • Lead migration from externally managed environments to internal platforms (e.g. DevOps hosting, pipelines)

  • Guide modernisation of architecture, tooling and engineering practices

  • Ensure systems are scalable, secure and aligned to long-term platform strategy

Cross-Squad Technical Leadership

  • Provide technical leadership across multiple squads and engineering chapters

  • Drive consistency in architecture, patterns and platform capabilities

  • Solve complex cross-domain challenges across payments, terminals and healthcare systems

  • Influence engineering roadmaps and prioritisation across the domain

Engineering Excellence

  • Uplift engineering maturity, code quality and DevSecOps practices

  • Champion modern CI/CD, automation and platform engineering approaches

  • Improve reliability, vulnerability management and operational standards

  • Help reduce reliance on managed service providers by building internal capability

Leadership & Influence

  • Act as a “voice of technology” across engineering and business stakeholders

  • Mentor and coach engineers, staff engineers and engineering leaders

  • Influence through technical credibility and hands-on contribution

  • Partner with product and business teams to align technology with customer outcomes

Hands-on Engineering

  • Contribute directly to code, design and solution delivery

  • Act as a squad-level technical leader where required

  • Remain close to delivery to ensure high-quality outcomes

We’re interested in hearing from people who have

  • Proven experience leading technical strategy across multiple engineering teams or domains

  • Strong hands-on engineering background at Principal/Staff level

  • Experience modernising platforms and migrating away from vendor-managed environments

  • Deep knowledge of distributed systems and cloud-native architectures

  • A track record of uplifting engineering capability, standards and culture

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence senior stakeholders

  • Experience operating in complex, regulated or high-availability environments

Payments or healthcare experience is beneficial but not essential.

Technical skills

We don’t expect expertise in every technology below — we’re looking for strong engineering leaders with broad experience across modern ecosystems.

Software Engineering

  • Strong backend engineering experience (e.g. .NET or similar)

  • API-driven and microservices architectures

  • Distributed systems design

Cloud & Platform Engineering

  • AWS (or equivalent cloud platforms)

  • CI/CD, DevSecOps and pipeline modernisation

  • Platform engineering and internal developer platforms

Architecture & Integration

  • System integration across external partners and services

  • Web-based platforms and service-oriented systems

  • Exposure to mobile (Android) or terminal applications is beneficial

Why join us?

  • Define and deliver the technical strategy for a unique payments + healthcare platform

  • Work hands-on while influencing multiple squads and engineering leaders

  • Lead a critical modernisation journey (platform migration, DevOps uplift, engineering maturity)

  • Solve complex challenges across payments, claims and real-time transaction systems

  • Gain exposure to the broader Payments & Customer Present ecosystem

  • Leave a lasting impact on how healthcare payments are delivered in Australia
