Do work that matters

At CommBank, we are transforming how operations work across the Bank - reimagining the systems, tools and experiences that enable our people to deliver for customers every day.

You’ll join a cross-functional team shaping a next-generation operations platform - designed to simplify and standardise complex processes, improve how work is allocated and managed, and unlock more consistent, efficient outcomes for both staff and customers.

This work sits at the intersection of experience, data, orchestration and AI, with an ambition to create scalable, reusable foundations that can support a wide range of operational processes across the Bank.

About the role

As a Principal Product Designer, you will be an expert individual contributor and design leader embedded in a cross-functional product squad.

You will lead design for a complex platform problem space - shaping how operational processes are experienced, scaled and continuously improved. This includes enabling continuous discovery and delivery, supporting immediate priorities while driving forward-looking opportunities in parallel.

You’ll partner closely with Product, Engineering, Data and business leaders to frame problems, define strategy, and translate ambition into high-quality, scalable experiences.

This role is suited to someone who can lead using your influence and systems level thinking, connecting long-term experience vision with hands-on delivery.

What you’ll do

Shape the future of operations

  • Define and drive the end-to-end design approach for a complex operations platform, balancing immediate delivery with longer-term transformation.

  • Translate operational challenges into clear opportunity areas, principles and experience direction.

  • Contribute to a vision where operational processes are simplified, standardised and reusable across teams, reducing fragmentation and rework.

Lead continuous discovery and learning

  • Lead discovery across high-value problem spaces, identifying unmet needs and opportunities for improvement.

  • Establish hypotheses, success measures and learning loops to guide product decisions.

  • Use qualitative and quantitative evidence to inform prioritisation and continuously improve outcomes.

Design scalable platform experiences

  • Create experience models, interaction patterns and service designs that scale across multiple processes and teams.

  • Prototype and iterate at varying levels of fidelity to support both rapid validation and delivery readiness.

  • Ensure experiences align to broader platform, data and operational considerations, including how work is surfaced, managed and measured.

Influence strategy and alignment

  • Partner with Product, Engineering and business stakeholders to embed design-led thinking in decision-making.

  • Drive alignment across squads and initiatives to create a cohesive experience across journeys and systems.

  • Influence senior stakeholders through clear narratives and evidence-based recommendations.

Lift design capability

  • Model high standards of design craft, systems thinking and problem solving.

  • Contribute to design practice through critique, coaching and collaboration within and beyond your squad.

What you’ll bring

  • Extensive experience designing complex platforms, products or services end-to-end in cross-functional teams.

  • A proven track record shaping experience strategy in ambiguous, high-complexity environments.

  • Deep expertise in systems thinking, service design and scalable experience design.

  • Strong capability in continuous discovery, experimentation and evidence-led decision making.

  • Confidence working with senior stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Data and business domains.

  • Ability to connect strategic intent with hands-on execution, from framing through to UX/UI delivery.

  • Strong facilitation, storytelling and influencing skills.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with emerging AI-enabled design and rapid prototyping tools, with the ability to leverage modern AI-assisted workflows to accelerate iteration, collaboration, and business requirement sign-off.

  • Experience with tools such as Figma Make, Claude Code, Codex, or similar tooling is highly desirable.

  • A portfolio demonstrating systems-level thinking, high-quality craft and measurable impact.

Why join us

  • Shape how operations work at scale across one of Australia’s largest organisations.

  • Work on high-impact platform challenges that improve outcomes for both staff and customers.

  • Be part of a collaborative product and design culture with the autonomy to influence direction and raise quality.

  • Access strong design leadership, community and investment in your growth.
